WebCT Workshops

If you would like to enrol in any of these workshops, check the Academic Staff Development database to see if any of these WebCT workshops are running.

Orientation to WebCT

WebCT is a set of tools that facilitate the creation of World Wide Web based educational environments. It can be used to create entire online courses, to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses or to provide tools such as discussion, email or chat for student communication.

This workshop covers the following:

  • Introduction to WebCT
  • Navigation of a WebCT unit
  • Using discussion, email, chat, calendar, my grades, presentation and assignment tools

Getting your unit into WebCT

Pre-requisite: Orientation to WebCT

This workshop will help you to customise a Murdoch unit to suit your teaching. You will learn how to:

  • Add and delete files (eg text, PowerPoint) in your WebCT course
  • Add a page or tool (eg discussion, assignment, student grades)
  • Edit an existing page or tool
  • Modify the student records

Introduction to Dreamweaver

Pre-requisites: Getting your unit into WebCT. Familiarity with HTML authoring is highly recommended.

Dreamweaver is a Web authoring program that has an easy to use graphical interface. This course will introduce you to some of the features of Dreamweaver and how to use Dreamweaver with WebCT.

The course will be a 3 hour hands on workshop and will cover the following:

  • Defining your website in Dreamweaver
  • The Dreamweaver workspace - palettes and inspectors
  • Importing and formatting text
  • Inserting images and tables
  • Creating hyperlinks
  • Previewing your page in a browser
  • Using Dreamweaver with WebCT.

Managing Student Records in WebCT

Pre-requisite: Getting your unit into WebCT

The workshop includes the following topics:

  • Adding, deleting or modifying student details
  • Sorting student records
  • Searching for specific information
  • Downloading student information files and accessing these with Excel
  • Customising the student database

Using the Content Module to provide an interactive learning environment

Pre-requisite: Getting your unit into WebCT

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Design the structure of a Content Module
  • Add tools to the entire Content Module
  • Add tools to the Action Menu of a specific item in the Content Module to provide interactions for your students

Quiz Design

Pre-requisite: Getting your unit into WebCT

This workshop covers the following:

  • The Self Test tool which can be used to provide students with feedback
  • The Quiz Tool which is used for online tests which can be fully or partly auto-marked by WebCT
  • The Survey Tool which can be used for surveying students and having the results summarised by WebCT

Features and Tools

Pre-requisite: Getting your unit into WebCT

This 3-hour session focuses on the WebCT Tools not covered in ''Introduction to WebCT''. The functionality of each tool will be explained with examples and hints on how the tools could be utilised in online teaching and learning.

The following tools will be covered:

  • Course Content Tools - Glossary, Image Database, Searching, Compile Pages, Annotations, Links, References and Bookmarks
  • Evaluation and Activity Tools - Self Test, Assignments, Student Presentations and Student Homepages
  • Student Tools - My Progress, My Grades, My Notes

Important notice about cancellation

Please provide an Account Code* via email to webct@murdoch.edu.au to confirm your registration.

If you have to withdraw, please let us know because non-attendance affects the viability of running training and it often means that someone else misses out.

*Note that these workshops attract a cancellation fee of $50 if you fail to attend or give less than 24 hours notice of non-attendance. Dispensation will be granted for absence due to sickness or personal crisis.
