How to use the WebCT Mail tool
The WebCT Mail tool allows unit participants to send email messages
to others in the same unit. WebCT Mail cannot
be sent to an external email address, such as a
Murdoch or Hotmail account, and external email accounts
cannot send email to WebCT Mail.
What is the WebCT Mail tool?
The Mail system within a WebCT unit is similar to email as it
allows private messages to be sent from one unit
participant to another, including students, tutors
and unit coordinators. However,
it provides for communication within a specific WebCT
unit only.
WebCT Mail cannot be sent to external
email addresses, such as a Murdoch or Hotmail email
account and an external email account cannot send
email to WebCT Mail.
Unit coordinators may enable message forwarding so
that you may forward WebCT Mail to your external
email account. However, you cannot reply to WebCT
Mail forwarded to your external email account.
To access the WebCT Mail, click on the Mail icon. It looks
like:

What does WebCT Mail look like?
The WebCT Mail tool is comprised of two main areas:
- The Folder Listing
- The Actions Menu

The Folder Listing, pictured
above - left, includes message options and your mail
folders. The default folders include: Inbox, Outbox
and Draft.
- Compose Message allows you to write a new Mail message, select
a message recipient(s) and include equations or
attachments.
- Search allows you to search your Mail messages
based on folder, status, sender, and more.
- Message Settings allows you to customise
threading and subject line display.
The Actions menu, pictured above - right, allows
you to create, rename and delete folders and
delete individual or multiple messages.

Displaying your Mail messages.
To display your Mail messages,
- Click on the Folder name e.g. Inbox whose
messages you want to view.

The Message Listing displays your messages
based on the Display options selected.
- Read messages are marked
with the open envelope icon

- Unread messages
are bolded and marked with the closed envelope
icon

To view messages,
- Select
the linked Subject or click
the envelope icon.

The message will open in a new window.

Managing Mail Messages.
Messages can be managed using the three main toolbars:
- Message Functions
- Display Options
- Message Options
Message Functions

Select Compose Message to
write a new Mail message, Update Listing to
view most recently recieved messages, Search to
find messages based on particular criteria and Mark
all as read to mark selected messages
as having been read.
The Message Options link
will direct you to options below the Message Listing.
Display Options

Select All to display
both read and unread messages, Unread to
display messages you have not yet read, Threaded to
arrange Mail messages by subject and Unthreaded to
display messages in chronological order.
The Select Folder option
allows you to easily navigate between your folders.
Select the folder you wish to view, and click Go.
Message Options

All message options require you to
select messages before taking Actions. Select messages
using the checkbox beside the Subject.
Compile will enable
you to view selected messages in a single view,
which you can then download. Mark as read / Mark
as unread will mark selected messages
as read or unread and Delete will
erase messages. You are not able to retrieve erased
messages.
The Move to: option
allows you to move selected messages into a different
folder. Select the folder from the list and click
the Go button.

Compose and Reply to Messages.
To compose a Mail message,

The compose message window will open.
- Click on the Browse button to select the
recipient(s) of the message. To select multiple
recipients, hold down Ctrl (PC) or the Apple
key (Mac) while you click on each intended recipient's
name.
- Enter a Subject.
- Type your Message. You can also include an
equation or attachment.
- Select Preview to view your message before
sending, then the Send button to post your
message.
To reply to a Mail message,
- View the Mail message you wish to reply to.
The Reply to Message window will open.

- Type your reply and click the Preview button
to view your message before sending.
- Select Send to post your reply
to the recipient(s).

Adding Attachments.
The Attach File button in the compose or reply window will allow
you to send attachments with your Mail messages.
To post an Attachment,
- Under the Attachments heading, select Browse.

- Browse to your computer's hard drive and select the file you
want to attach.
- Once you have selected the file to attach, click the Open button then click the Attach
File button.

Repeat the process to add more than one attachment.
NOTE: It is recommended that your attached files be saved
as an RTF or HTML file so that the attachment can
be opened by most word processors or be viewed in
a web browser.

Viewing Attachments.
Messages that have attachments will display a different message
header. A See Attached icon will be displayed
with the message.

- Click on the See Attached link to view the
attachments.
- In the attachment view, click on the filename to display
the attached document.
WebCT will display HTML files but other files will
appear in a list and you will have the option to
download them to a local disk for viewing in the
appropriate software application.

Forwarding WebCT Mail to external email accounts.
Message Settings allows users to change the display settings
of messages and forward mail to an external email
account.

Threads per page allows you to specify how many
threads to view when viewing messages in a folder.
Length of subject allows you to set the number
of characters displayed in the subject heading when
listed in a mail folder.
Mail Forwarding:
To Forward your mail to an external email address,
- Next to Mail Forwarding, select Forward my mail to and
enter the email address that you want your messages
forwarded to in the text box.
- Click Update.
All WebCT mail messages will now be
forwarded, as you receive them, to this external
email address.
