Create a New Equation
Create an Equation
To create an equation for any of the supported WebCT tools, select
the Equation Editor button below the textbox in which
you want to insert an equation e.g. Discussions.
The Equation Editor will open in a new window.
Use the Template Icons, Symbols
Palette and your keyboard to create your equation.
To access the Symbols Palette, click the Symbols
Palette icon 
To add a template to your equation:
- Click on the template icon you require e.g. Fraction
The icon will be automatically inserted into your equation,
as below.
To add numbers and operators to the template:
- Using your keyboard,
- Type in
an alphanumeric character and press the enter or return key
on your keyboard. You may also use the symbols
palette to insert a symbol into the template.
Step One: Select a template
to edit by using your mouse to click the
template editable area.

Step Two: Using your keyboard,
type an alphanumeric character into the editable
area - you can also add a symbol.

Step Three:
Continue typing until you have completed
the template

- Repeat the steps needed to add templates and add
alphanumeric characters until you have
completed your equation.
NOTE:
Do not insert spaces between templates
as this will display the equation incorrectly.

Submit and Insert an Equation
When your equation is completed, you will need to give it a Title and
then click the Submit button.
The process of
saving and submitting is different between a Macintosh computer
and a PC.
Macintosh
The Macintosh interface includes the Equation Viewer.
When you click the Submit button, the Equation
Viewer opens in a new window and allows you to preview
and edit your equation.
- Font Size will change the size of the templates, symbols
and alphanumerical characters used in your equation.
- Preview refreshes the equation displayed to show
changes made to the equation.
- Edit Equation will open
the Equation Editor so you can make changes.
- Increase editor size / Decrease
editor size will
increase or decrease the size of the Equation
Editor's Editing Area when you select
the Edit Equation button.
When you have finished editing your equation,
PC
The PC interface includes the Equation Editor and the Equation
Viewer in a single screen.
- Font Size will change the size of the templates, symbols
and alphanumerical characters used in your equation.
- Increase editor size / Decrease
editor size will increase or decrease the size
of the Equation Editor's Editing Area when
you select the Edit Equation button.
Once your equation is complete, click the Insert button.
The equation will be automatically inserted into the WebCT tool
which you are using.
