Setting up WebDAV in Dreamweaver

WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning" and enables course designers to manage the copying of their Dreamweaver created pages to and from the My-Files area in WebCT.

To use WebDAV with WebCT, you will need access to a computer running Dreamweaver (4 and above) and a connection to the Internet.

Log in to WebCT, and go to the MyWebCT area.

  • Click on the WebDAV Info link in the top navigation bar

webdav info link

  • Under WebDAV URLs is a list of all the units you have access to

webdav info screen

  • Copy the Course Files URL for the unit you are editing
  • Click on Return to myWebCT link, then Logout of WebCT

Open Dreamweaver.

In Dreamweaver:

  • Click on the Site pull-down menu
  • Select New Site... from the menu

The Site Definition window appears.

  • Give your new site a name. It is recommended you name your site after your course, e.g. A123 Introduction to WebCT
  • Click the Next button

  • Select the radio button next to "No, I do not want to use server technology"
  • Click the Next button

  • Select the radio button next to "Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to the server when ready"
  • Click the Next button

  • From the "How do you want to connect to your remote server" menu, select WebDAV
  • Click the Settings button. The WebDAV Connection window will be made available

  • Paste or type your WebDAV URL (as copied from the WebDAV Info area in WebCT) in to the URL text box.

NOTE!

You must delete :80 from the WebDAV URL for WebDAV to work correctly, as highlighted in the image below:

  • Enter your WebCT username and password as well as an email address so WebDAV can identify you
  • Click the OK button
  • Click the Next button

  • Enable Check In / Check Out and select "Dreamweaver should check it out". If several designers are working on one course, this will allow you to collaborate without overwriting each other's work
  • Click the Next button

  • You will now see a summary of your site settings. Click the Done button
