Student Marks Links: Add and Delete Student Data
Each column in your student table and the settings for each column are displayed. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll through all of the columns. Select a column by clicking on the checkbox above the displayed column name. The Column Editing Functions are listed in the Action Menu.
To add a column to the Student Table:
By default, the new column is positioned
to the right of the right most existing column. To insert the column at a
different position, select the check box above one of the existing columns
before adding the new column. This will insert the new column to the left
of the selected column.
There are six different types of columns: Alphanumeric (A) - Alphanumeric fields contain any sequence of characters including letters and numbers. This type is used for fields that have no numeric significance. Examples include Last Name and First Name. Calculated (C) - Calculated fields contain a formula based on one or more of the numeric fields in the database. Unlike Letter Grade fields, Calculated fields compute numerical results. Examples include generating totals or averages for a set of columns. Letter Grade (L) - Letter Grade fields enable you to assign a letter grade to a student assignment or test rather than showing a numerical grade. Letter grades are based on numeric values in the database. A Letter Grade field will convert a numeric value according to the criteria you have set. Examples include calculating final letter grades based on a number of columns or simply converting individual numerical columns into letter grade equivalents. Text (M) - Text fields are also alphanumeric fields. The contents of these fields are not shown in the regular course listing. Instead, when you have added a text field pertaining to a particular student, WebCT inserts a View button in place of the field for each student. To view the field contents for that student, click View in the text column. Text fields are useful for inserting additional textual information about a particular student, for example, addresses or general comments, which would otherwise clutter up the student listing. Numeric (N) - Numeric fields consist of only digits. These fields can be used when calculating totals. Examples include assignment or midterm marks. Selection Box (S) - Selection Box fields enable you to pre-program a choice of entries for a field so as to make column editing easier and more efficient. It also allows you to more easily compare results of different groups of students. Examples include indicating different section numbers within the same course, indicating group numbers or names and indicating different graders.
