Go Online
As a unit coordinator you have day-to-day control over your units. You provide learning
activities and content appropriate for your students and the objectives of the unit and you manage the
progress of students in the unit.
To help with the development of your unit, the TLC (Teaching and Learning Centre) provides
a WebCT unit template, advice, training and administrative support. ITS (Information Technology Services)
maintains system support for WebCT.
The steps for placing a unit online are:
| Step 1 |
| Unit Coordinator |
- Enter an online request for a WebCT unit
- Enter your Murdoch number and password
You will be asked to enter the following data:
- |
unit code |
- |
whether you want a new WebCT unit or a unit based on an existing
unit and the WebCT code for that unit |
- |
the group(s) of students who will access the unit |
- |
coordinator name - if it is different from the previous teaching
period or you are requesting the unit on behalf of the coordinator |
- |
the date the unit is to be activated if it is different from
the start of the teaching period |
Enter the name(s) of additional designer(s) and tutor(s) in the Comment box.
|
| TLC |
- provides a WebCT unit template
- assigns the coordinator(s) designer access

|
NB The unit is held in the 'Under Development' category until it is ready to be offered
to students.
| Step 2 |

- may attend the WebCT workshops offered
by TLC. (Recommended if you are new to WebCT).

design (print and online)

and WebCT tools
- either

| Step 4 |
| Unit Coordinator |
- ensures copyright requirements regarding reproduction of text, graphics and
other intellectual property are met. No material is to be placed on a web page without the written
permission of the copyright owner and records of permission should be filed. Pictures or videos
of people should not be placed on web pages without the person's permission. Third party content
(eg journal articles) should be placed on e-reserve and
linked from within the WebCT unit. See Murdoch's Copyright
Policy
|
| Step 5 |
| Unit Coordinator |
- informs students how to access and study their online unit.
- |
directs them to Getting Started with WebCT and
descriptions of the Discussions, Assignments, Presentations, Mail and Equation Editor
tools available on the Login to
WebCT page. |
|
| Step 6 |
| TLC |
- arranges for the unit to be 'activated'. Student data will be automatically
added and the unit will be available to students enrolled in the unit.
|
Activation of units is normally done three days before the start of the teaching period.
Once your unit is online you will need to:
1. Follow the steps in Administer your unit to
ensure:
- other staff can access the unit as necessary
- all students can access the unit
- the unit is no longer available to students after the end of the current teaching
period
- preparation is done for rerunning the unit in the next teaching period
2. Review the content and design in light of use and feedback.
3. Keep up to date via the WebCT mailing list and the WebCT Newsletter.
Review the life cycle of a WebCT unit for the steps needed to manage a unit.
Contact: webct@murdoch.edu.au if there are
any changes to staff accessing the unit, any problems with the unit or assistance is needed with using
WebCT and its tools.
