What kind of browser is required to use WebCT?

You may use any browser that handles frames, tables and javascript. Check the Computer Requirements page for information regarding the browsers suitable for WebCT Campus Edition 4.1.

Do I require a java-capable browser?

Certain tools require Java:

  • The Chat facility,
  • Whiteboard tool,
  • The Equation Editor, and

histograms displayed in student management and student tracking. If Java is not enabled, you can still view content modules and organizer pages, however, you will not be able to use the chat, whiteboard or equation editor or display a histogram.

When I change the size of my Netscape window, all changes made in the text entry box disappear.

Whenever you resize a browser window, the browser automatically reloads the page contents to fit into the (new size) window. This means that all changes since the last save will be lost. The easiest solution is to resize all your windows before you begin work. Or, if you must resize the window in the middle of your work, copy and paste your text out to NotePad or TextEdit so it can be saved until you can work on it again.

I've made some changes to my documents in WebCT but the changes don't appear. Updating/reloading the page does not solve the problem. What's wrong?

Sometimes, the Netscape cache can cause problems with uploading. For best results, set your Netscape Network Preferences to verify documents every time, to make sure that you're getting current information. This is a good idea for any Web browser looking at interactive material like WebCT.

Can staff change their passwords?

The password for WebCT is your Murdoch Password. See Murdoch Password Help (staff) if you want to change your Murdoch Password or have forgotten it.

Can students change their passwords?

Students can change their WebCT Passwords by using the Murdoch Change Password (students) faciltiy. If the student has forgotten their password, they can visit or email the IT Service Desk in the library and request a password change.

Where do I send students for help?

For technical difficulties with WebCT or iLecture, students should contact the IT Service Desk either by email or telephone: 9360 2000. During semester the helpdesk is staffed from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and from 12 to 5pm on weekends.

Information about using WebCT and iLecture can be found at http://www.murdoch.edu.au/studentit.

Why can't I add all WebCT Tools to the action menu at the top of my page?

To reduce clutter and student confusion, WebCT only allows certain tools to be placed into the Action Menu. The tools that are relevant to the action menu are:

  • Annotations
  • Glossary
  • Bookmarks
  • Search
  • Index
  • Chat
  • Discussions
  • Quizzes
  • Mail

Other tools are added to the action menu for each particular page as the designer adds information to that page:

  • Self-test questions
  • Learning Goals
  • Audio Clips
  • Video Clips
  • References
  • Links
Why does the action menu frame display error messages when my students access pages of notes?

You haven't updated the student view. Click on "Update Student View" on the Content Module - Table of Contents menu.
